The role of a Billing System Engineering Manager, Commercial Systems at Canonical
This engineering management role is an opportunity for a technologist with a passion for Linux and Ubuntu to build a career with Canonical and drive the success of the business. The Commercial Systems unit has several areas of responsibility spread across six engineering teams, closely collaborating with other engineering and business teams at Canonical. Services designed, developed, and operated by the Commercial Systems unit are at the heart of Canonical business and Salesforce plays an integral role in it.
The Billing team's mission is to develop an internal billing system, delivering a consistent billing experience to all Canonical customers across all products and services, and across all service delivery methods. This challenging assignment requires close cooperation with business departments to ensure our customers are billed accurately and reliably, while achieving the highest engineering standards expected of any engineering team at Canonical.
We are looking for an engineering manager with prior engineering experience in a high-level programming language, who strives for the highest engineering quality, seeks improvements, continuously develops their skills, and applies them at work. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a fairly unique solution and build expertise in billing and finance.
Location : This role will be based remotely in the EMEA region.
What your day will look like
- Lead, mentor, and hire a team of software engineers
- Seek improvements to established processes, designs, and engineering solutions
- Partner with business customers to understand business needs

- Deliver engineering solutions
- Experience as a software developer in a high-level language - preferably Go or Python
- Experience as a hands-on engineering manager or a team lead
- Experience designing or implementing billing systems

- Ability to collaborate remotely with a diverse set of team members and stakeholders, remain highly motivated, productive, and organized in a fully remote environment
- Ability to travel to international destinations for one week at a time, approximately 2-4 times per year. Locations prior to the global pandemic included New York, Seattle, London, Cape Town, Budapest, Berlin, Montreal, and Brussels
- Experience with Salesforce or NetSuite
- Experience in a business role such as sales, finance, or operations
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related engineering field
Your base pay will depend on various factors including your geographical location, level of experience, knowledge and skills. - Hands-on and extensive working experience in supporting Linux systems including 3 or more of:
- Virtualization / Cloud - primarily using KVM or OpenStack
- Containers - especially with Docker, LXD/LXC, or Kubernetes
- Storage technologies - block, object and network
- Networking (bonding, firewalling, bridging, switching, network file system tuning, MTU issues, etc.)
- Cloud computing expertise in provisioning, monitoring, orchestration, etc.
- Advanced troubleshooting experience:
- Linux integration with other environments (authentication/directory services, network file systems, etc.)
- Ability to navigate effectively stack traces and logs, and advise on next steps
- Solid understanding of OS and Application level bugs and when to escalate to the correct team
- Programming fundamentals in any language.
- Extensive customer support experience is key:
- Customer needs are top priority.
- Communicate professionally, emphatically, clearly and set the right expectations.
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.

Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
CompTIA Security + (IAT Level II or greater)

This position is in support of a Department of Defense (DoD) organization, USAREUR-AF and their Mission Partners located OCONUS in Bulgaria, Germany (Dulmen, Grafenwoehr, Wiesbaden), Italy, Kosovo, Netherlands, Poland (Bemowo Piskie, Boleslawiec, Konotop, Powitz, Pozan, Swietoszow, Zagan), and Romania . This position is required to travel OCONUS. This position is located OCONUS.
Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and implements robust, secure, scalable, and high-performance classified and unclassified network solutions that meet operational requirements and security policies
Develops and implements Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipelines and supports Development, Security, and Operations (DevSecOps) processes IAW DoD and industry security and engineering best practices, standards, tools, and techniques
Provides IT communications services, including planning, designing, engineering, operating, maintaining, defending, and employing services
Maintains networks to ensure 24x7 availability of critical systems on NIPR, SIPR, TS/SCI, intelligence, and communication networks, and supports Command and Control (C2) infrastructure
Provides troubleshooting of incidents and problems, including developing work-arounds to return services to functioning status
Sustains the transmission or communication path between geographically separated users and devices
Plans, designs, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, resolves problems, and performs network asset management of Cisco switches and routers; Brocade switches and routers; Juniper routers, switches, and firewalls; Cisco firewalls; proxy servers; Intrusion Protections Systems (IPSs); and encryption devices
Configures VPN tunnels on Cisco, Brocade, and Juniper devices and configures TACLANES
Maintains COMSEC account(s) in support of the installation of encryption keys
Provides systems engineering planning and support for Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
Provides migration and transition support to implement approved engineered solutions
May assess and evaluate emerging policies and technology and make recommendations for network and system updates that improve the efficiency, effectiveness, availability, and security posture
Evaluates and tests COTS and GOTS applications and hardware for integration into networks
Applies measures to secure applications and hardware and ensures the network remains within ATO compliance
Contributes to development and/or maintenance of deliverables, such as operational guidelines, user guides, and Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) documentation (DEL 19)
May attend and participate in strategic discussions related to emerging technologies, network and system technology insertions, and project planning
May lead projects for technology insertions and network updates
Possesses and applies a comprehensive knowledge across key tasks and high-impact assignments
Functions as a technical expert across multiple project assignments
Qualifications:
Required:
Currently hold an adjudicated Secret with ability obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Clearance
BA/BS + 7 years recent specialized or AA/AS + 9 years recent specialized or a major cert + 9 years recent specialized or 13 years of recent specialized experience
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
CompTIA Security + (IAT Level II or greater)
Expert level experience working with and supporting Cisco Routers and Switches in a complex enterprise environment
