  • Supports a community of practice (CoP), guiding and helping agile teams, product owners to align with the overall enterprise architecture governance and assurance.
  • Designs and directs the governance activities associated with ensuring solutions architecture assurance and compliance (stretch ).
  • Defines the principles, guidelines, standards and solution patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information-technology, engineering, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in at least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical or infrastructure architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management or cloud development.
  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms and processing environments.
  • Experience working in a relevant industry is helpful, but not required.
  • Experience developing architecture blueprints, strategies and roadmaps.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of various backend development languages like Java, Go and Python.

4- Provide Enterprise Guidance

  • Provides deliverables like standard definitions, reference models and architecture designs to support architectural governance to assess the impact of new and ongoing technology investment on the business and IT estate (note: The level of detail and complexity in deliverables would vary depending on a solutions architect's level of responsibility in the organization chart).
  • Supports a community of practice (CoP), guiding and helping agile teams, product owners to align with the overall enterprise architecture governance and assurance.
  • Designs and directs the governance activities associated with ensuring solutions architecture assurance and compliance (stretch ).
  • Defines the principles, guidelines, standards and solution patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information-technology, engineering, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in at least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical or infrastructure architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management or cloud development.
  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms and processing environments.
  • Experience working in a relevant industry is helpful, but not required.
  • Experience developing architecture blueprints, strategies and roadmaps.
  • Experience delivering presentations to senior-level executives and technical audiences.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of various backend development languages like Java, Go and Python.
  • Good understanding of various database technologies like MySQL, MongoDB and Oracle .
  • Sound knowledge of relevant enterprise, cloud or customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
  • Knowledge of various artificial intelligence/machine learning frameworks (AI/ML)
  • Data savvy with knowledge of various aspects of a technology architecture like integration, network and security.
  • Good understanding of information principles and processes
  • Knowledge of financial models and budgeting (mention relevant skills for calculating TCO, applying Finops principles.
  • Understanding and knowledge of system development life cycle methodologies (such as waterfall, spiral, agile software development, rapid prototyping, incremental, synchronize and stabilize and DevOps).
  • Understanding and knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) and information technology infrastructure library (ITIL).
  • Hands-on experience in different modeling languages (such as UML and ArchiMate)
  • Understanding of IT standards and controls.
  • Industry experience in applying application development methodologies and infrastructure and network architecture.
  • Proven analytical, planning, organizational and technical and skills
  • Good understanding of strategic and emerging technology trends, and the practical application of existing and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models.

Overview

Software Architect - Containers / Virtualisation at Canonical. We are hiring a software architect for Canonical LXD and MicroCloud. Our goal is to make clusters of compute, with system containers or virtual machines, "just work". This is a challenging exercise in distributed systems, virtualisation, container technology, networking and storage. LXD is a modern Golang system container and virtual machine orchestrator widely used on Ubuntu, ChromeOS and other Linux platforms. LXD engineering spans the entire software stack from low-level kernel work on namespaces, confinement, security, filesystems, VMMs and networking, to the high level management REST API and CLI.

Location: This is a home-based position available in EMEA and the Americas.

Canonically, this role focuses on driving architecture, design and evolution of LXD, and Canonical MicroCloud which combines LXD with Ceph and OVN to create a lean, easy to use and resilient cluster-scale cloud infrastructure.

Key responsibilities
  • Technical Vision & Architecture
    • Define and articulate the platform’s technical vision and roadmap in alignment with business goals and stakeholder requirements.
    • Design a scalable, modular, and secure system architecture that supports real-time data ingestion, processing, and AI/ML integration.
    • Evaluate and select appropriate technologies, frameworks, and tools to ensure high performance and maintainability.

  • Security & Compliance
    • Collaborate with Security Engineers to integrate security best practices into the design and development lifecycle.
    • Ensure that the platform complies with industry standards and regulatory requirements regarding data privacy and security.
  • Participate in strategic planning, sprint planning, and technical reviews to drive successful project execution.
  • Identify risks, resolve complex technical challenges, and proactively recommend solutions to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of architectural designs, technical decisions, and system configurations.
  • Experience:
    • 8–12+ years of professional experience in software development, with significant experience in system architecture and technical leadership roles.
    • Proven track record in designing and delivering scalable, high-performance, data-intensive applications or platforms, preferably in telecom, enterprise software, or AI-driven environments.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep expertise in designing microservices architectures, distributed systems, and real-time data processing pipelines.
    • Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, Node.js) and familiarity with modern frameworks and tools.
    • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
    • Strong understanding of API design, integration strategies, security best practices, and performance optimization.
    • Prior exposure to AI/ML integrations and working with generative AI or LLM technologies is a plus.
  • Leadership & Soft Skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and manage technical teams in an agile, fast-paced environment.
