We are hiring an Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering who is passionate about open source software, Linux and cloud computing. Role and team

Sustaining Engineering is a business critical team that continuously improves various open source software by resolving software defects reported by customers. The software stack includes everything from the kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms. This position leads one of our regional teams and reports directly to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering. Our customers build large‑scale mission critical infrastructure and application solutions on Ubuntu and open source from Canonical. While not actively developing products, Sustaining Engineering, as part of Support Engineering, solves problems for the customer and for the benefit of the wider Open Source community. The team is well staffed with experts in every time zone and is resourced to ensure a good work‑life balance and ongoing development of each team member.

As an Engineering Manager in the Sustaining Engineering team, your primary responsibility is to the people you support: ensuring that they are growing as engineers, making valuable contributions, and generally having a great experience at Canonical. You will provide technical leadership and have a solid background in software development to help your team grow professionally. You will influence culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.

Responsibilities

• Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers

What we are looking for

• Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar
• Knowledgeable and passionate about software development
• Leadership experience organizing and prioritizing complex problem resolution and bug fixes
• Experience with version control systems such as Git
• Experience with debugging tools such as gdb, crash or other
• Demonstrated strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality
• Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
• Experience with Linux, with a preference for Ubuntu
• Experience with Open Source and Open Source business models
• People management experience in a support organization is a strong plus

The Duty Engineer is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the smooth operation of the hotel’s engineering systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and other mechanical equipment. YOUR DAY-TO-DAY

• Monitor, inspect, and maintain all hotel engineering equipment and systems (HVAC, boilers, chillers, electrical panels, plumbing, elevators, fire alarm systems, etc.)
• Respond promptly to engineering-related emergencies and guest requests to ensure minimal disruption
• Perform routine preventive maintenance and repairs according to schedules and manufacturers’ recommendations

+ Perform routine preventive maintenance and repairs according to schedules and manufacturers' recommendations

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
+ Proven experience as a Duty Engineer or in a similar engineering/maintenance role within a hotel or commercial facility
+ Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
+ Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and manuals
+ Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
+ Strong communication and interpersonal skills
+ Flexibility to work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
+ Relevant technical certification or diploma preferred (e.g., Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, HVAC certification)
+ Basic computer skills for maintenance management systems and reporting

The Engineering Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the hotel engineering team to ensure all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and safety systems are functioning efficiently. This role involves supervising maintenance staff, coordinating preventive maintenance, managing repairs, and ensuring compliance with safety standards to deliver a comfortable and safe environment for guests and staff.
YOUR DAY-TO-DAY:
+ Supervise and lead the engineering team to ensure timely and effective maintenance and repair of hotel facilities and equipment
+ Plan, schedule, and oversee preventive maintenance programs and emergency repairs
+ Conduct regular inspections of hotel systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, elevators, etc.) to ensure operational efficiency and safety compliance
+ Manage work orders, maintenance logs, and ensure documentation is accurate and up-to-date
+ Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and suppliers for outsourced maintenance and repair work
+ Train, mentor, and evaluate engineering staff performance
+ Monitor inventory levels of engineering supplies and equipment; requisition materials as necessary
+ Assist in developing and managing the engineering budget, including labor, materials, and equipment costs
+ Ensure adherence to all local regulations, codes, and hotel policies related to safety and maintenance
+ Respond to urgent engineering issues and provide solutions in a timely manner
+ Collaborate with other hotel departments to support operational needs and guest satisfaction
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
+ Proven experience in a supervisory role within hotel engineering or facilities management
+ Strong technical knowledge of hotel engineering systems: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire safety
