Overview

Canonical's Device Delivery Team works with tier-1 OEM and ODM customers to pre-load Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core, bringing Ubuntu directly to millions of users.

As a Software Engineering Manager you will lead and manage the software engineering team to deliver OEM enablement projects. This fast-paced environment requires excellent time management, deep knowledge of the Linux system, low-level debugging, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and management ability.

Responsibilities
  • Recruit, motivate, mentor, and enable your team to succeed in delivering quality products
  • Set goals with the team; prioritize tasks, identify and measure team health indicators
  • Maximise the results of team members and support their career growth
  • Coordinate with project managers, HWE, QA and certification management
  • Monitor projects from kickoff to post-mortem and handle escalations
  • Communicate, understand, and resolve the technical challenge with OEMs, ODMs, SiPs, IHVs
  • Prioritize customer requests globally
  • Collaborate with product engineering teams (including Desktop, Foundations, Kernel, and Security)
  • Provide leadership for methodologies, strategies, standards, tools, and best practices
  • Must be able to travel to the EU, USA, China, and Taiwan; (after covid-19 restrictions lift)
Required Skills And Experience
  • A Bachelor (or higher) degree in STEM, preferably computer science or software engineering
  • Proven track record in technical roles with Linux, preferably Ubuntu or Debian
  • Commitment to development and testing methodologies, and maintainable code quality

Role and team

Sustaining Engineering is a business critical team that continuously improves various open source software by resolving software defects reported by customers. Our customers build large‑scale mission critical infrastructure and application solutions on Ubuntu and open source from Canonical. What we are hiring: Project Manager - Ubuntu Embedded Systems at Canonical

As a Project Manager for Canonical's Devices business, this role is responsible for the coordination and completion of large complex customer-facing projects, overseeing all aspects of project delivery and acting as the primary delivery liaison between Canonical's engineering teams and Canonical's customers.

You will be managing the projects that involve the delivery of Ubuntu images on a wide variety of devices ranging from robots, edge gateways, and IoT devices to PCs and automotive systems. This is a high-profile project management position where you are expected to build and maintain working relationships with team members, customers, other partners/vendors (Silicon vendors, OEMs, ODMs, IHVs), and other Canonical departments/teams.

Location: This role will be based remotely in the AMERICAs and/or EMEA regions.

The role entails

  • Managing projects through their complete life cycle and ensuring that the overall goals for both Canonical and the client are met
  • Successfully delivering engineering professional services for assigned projects
  • Working with engineering teams on custom board enablement and delivery of Ubuntu images to the customers
  • Assisting in the development of project statements of work
  • Drafting and maintaining project-specific schedules/project plans
  • Obtaining client agreement to the project schedule and agreed-upon work items
  • Ensuring projects are delivered within the time/resources/scope expectations
  • Managing project risk mitigation and plans
  • Driving technical issues to reach desired delivery outcomes
  • Maintain daily and weekly communication with the client and all internal stakeholders
  • Managing delivery schedule of critical third-party deliverables for the project
  • Keeping management informed of the status of assigned projects
  • Identifying custom engineering requests that are not part of an existing business contract
  • Advocating the appropriate technologies from Canonical's product portfolio to customers
  • Supporting different time zones and work non-traditional hours as required to support the assigned projects

What we are looking for in you

  • Solid project management experience in delivering engineering services to customers managing software development teams and field engineers
  • Extensive experience successfully managing projects with cross-cultural and multi-continent internal and external project resources, preferably with resources in Asia, Europe, and the Americas
  • Educational degree preferably in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math
  • Good knowledge of Linux and the wider Open Source Software community, and understanding of computer architecture
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, in English
  • Strong leader and problem solver with extensive experience building successful internal and external partnerships and effective working relationships with demanding project sponsors in complex organizational environments
  • PMP/PMI or PRINCE2 Practitioner Certification preferred
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours in support of a worldwide sales and project team

We want to transform the world of software operations by enabling true model-driven operations via next-generation infrastructure-as-code. This will allow companies to run very efficient bare-metal operations for high-performance computing, private cloud, data lakes, AI/ML, and analytics. We need to invent some new technology, and we need to build some new products; we are therefore looking for someone who can lead and inspire a regional software engineering team to fulfill this initiative.

The Solutions Engineering team works in close collaboration with our managed infrastructure operations team, which runs many private OpenStack clouds and Kubernetes clusters for customers around the world. This enables us to improve our infra-as-code products based on our own real experience, mirroring that of our users and customers. We work in Python, creating open source automation capabilities that simplify operations for anybody, anywhere, who is building on Ubuntu.

Most of the team's work involves pure Python software development focused on enabling true DevOps workflows. We strive for high quality in both design, documentation, tests, and performance as we enhance operations code packages and Ubuntu itself in order to ensure our platform is the easiest, most robust, and best performing for driving your infrastructure.

This role is ideal for software engineers who want to work in a global team, have a passion for distributed systems and cloud computing, and an interest in the entire Linux stack - from kernel to networking to virtualization and containers.

We are hiring engineering managers who are passionate about operational systems, open source technologies and cutting-edge hardware to lead engineering teams to enable and optimize Ubuntu for the latest x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x and POWER systems.

We partner with the world's leading silicon vendors to optimise Ubuntu on their latest platforms. We integrate next-generation features and performance enhancements in Ubuntu while also ensuring a common operating experience for their users.

Engineering Managers should be outstanding developers themselves. They should be completely at home reviewing a patch or a software design spec. You will be expected to drive healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality and performance optimisations as well as lead your team to deliver high-quality design and code.

An Engineering Manager is responsible for line management and career guidance. The ability to develop engineering talent, to represent your team and product from a technical perspective, and to drive collaboration with other teams and customers are all critical to success in this role.

You will have the opportunity to influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.

Location: This is a globally remote role. We have open positions in every time zone.

What your day will look like

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior
  • Oversee commercial engagements and support timely delivery on agreed project milestones
  • Participate as technical lead on complex customer engagements involving complete system architectures
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes
  • Integrate and maintain platform-oriented software stacks
  • Optimize Ubuntu for latest hardware platforms
  • Display technical leadership internally and within our external communities
  • Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation

What we are looking for in you

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python
  • Experience with Linux and operational systems software (e.g. kernel or user space)
  • Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distro packaging
  • Experience leading software engineering teams
  • Professional written and spoken English
  • Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation
  • Thoughtfulness, and self-motivation
  • Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long

Overview

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Embedded Software Engineer to develop and maintain firmware for custom ASIC, photonic, and Lidar-based systems. This role is key to enabling hardware functionality through low-level driver integration, supporting system bring-up, and delivering robust embedded solutions for internal and customer-facing platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Firmware Development
    • Design and implement embedded software for microcontrollers, SoCs, and FPGA-based platforms.
    • Develop and optimize drivers for SPI, I2C, UART, ADCs, GPIOs, and custom hardware blocks.
    • Ensure code efficiency and real-time performance in bare-metal or RTOS-based environments.
  • Hardware Integration
    • Support hardware bring-up, validation, and diagnostics in lab settings.
    • Collaborate with hardware, analog, and systems teams to verify embedded interfaces.
    • Debug hardware/software issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers.
  • Software Infrastructure
    • Develop and maintain embedded codebases in C/C++ and scripting tools (e.g., Python).
    • Utilize version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI tools for code management and testing.
    • Contribute to internal documentation and customer firmware support resources.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in embedded systems development.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ with experience in bare-metal or RTOS environments.
  • Proficient with embedded development toolchains (e.g., GCC, Keil, IAR) and debugging workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters).
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, USB.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, wireless protocols, or photonic/Lidar systems is a plus.
