Job Description for the Position: Electrical Design Engineer
Job Summary
The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for the detailed design, engineering, and execution of high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) substation projects up to 400kV. The role involves developing both primary and secondary engineering designs, ensuring technical compliance, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and clients to deliver projects successfully from the concept stage through to energization.
Key Responsibilities
Primary design
- Layouts: Produce single-line diagrams (SLDs), Overall layouts for Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) for 132kV, 220kV and 400kV Substations, electrical plans and sections, and lightning protection layouts.
- Calculations: Perform necessary electrical calculations, including:
- Earthing (grounding) grid design and analysis
- Lighting design for switchyards and buildings
- Busbar sizing (rigid and flexible) for short-circuit and ampacity requirements
- Equipment sizing for transformers, circuit breakers, surge arresters, and other high-voltage components
- DC system calculations, including battery and battery charger sizing
- Cable sizing and cable tray/trench layouts
Secondary design and protection
- Protection and control: Formulate protection and control schemes and prepare the associated logic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- System studies: Conduct and analyze power system studies using software like ETAP/ DigSilent, including load flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination studies.
- SCADA and communication: Design and integrate SCADA/ SCS systems and communication networks for the substation.
Documentation and coordination
- Technical specifications: Prepare detailed technical specifications and data sheets for all electrical equipment and materials.
- Vendor coordination: Coordinate with vendors and review their technical offers and engineering drawings for compliance with project specifications.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with civil, structural, and control engineers to manage design interfaces and ensure seamless project integration.
- Reporting: Prepare technical reports, progress reports, and engineering documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Project execution support
- Procurement support: Assist with the procurement process, including the preparation of tender documents and technical bid evaluations.
- Site support: Provide technical support to the construction, testing, and commissioning teams, and resolve any design-related issues that arise on site.
- Quality assurance: Conduct design reviews and quality checks to ensure all project deliverables meet safety, quality, and performance standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a reputed university. A Master's degree is often preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in HV/EHV substation design, with specific experience on 400kV projects.
- Certification: Training on electrical software would be an added advantage.
- Standards: Thorough knowledge of relevant international standards (IEC, IEEE) and national/local grid codes.
Required Skills
- Technical expertise: Proven proficiency in primary and secondary substation design, including GIS and AIS technologies.
- Software proficiency: Expertise with relevant design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, DigSilent or PSCAD.
- Problem-solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex design issues.
