Overview

Canonical's Device Delivery Team works with tier-1 OEM and ODM customers to pre-load Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core, bringing Ubuntu directly to millions of users.

As a Software Engineering Manager you will lead and manage the software engineering team to deliver OEM enablement projects. This fast-paced environment requires excellent time management, deep knowledge of the Linux system, low-level debugging, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and management ability.

Responsibilities
  • Recruit, motivate, mentor, and enable your team to succeed in delivering quality products
  • Set goals with the team; prioritize tasks, identify and measure team health indicators
  • Maximise the results of team members and support their career growth
  • Coordinate with project managers, HWE, QA and certification management
  • Monitor projects from kickoff to post-mortem and handle escalations
  • Communicate, understand, and resolve the technical challenge with OEMs, ODMs, SiPs, IHVs
  • Prioritize customer requests globally
  • Collaborate with product engineering teams (including Desktop, Foundations, Kernel, and Security)
  • Provide leadership for methodologies, strategies, standards, tools, and best practices
  • Must be able to travel to the EU, USA, China, and Taiwan; (after covid-19 restrictions lift)
Required Skills And Experience
  • A Bachelor (or higher) degree in STEM, preferably computer science or software engineering
  • Proven track record in technical roles with Linux, preferably Ubuntu or Debian
  • Commitment to development and testing methodologies, and maintainable code quality
  • Experience with management responsibilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation
  • Commitment and energy to deliver on schedule
  • Strong English and Chinese language communication skills, both written and verbal

Role and team

Sustaining Engineering is a business critical team that continuously improves various open source software by resolving software defects reported by customers. The software stack includes everything from the kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms. Our customers build large‑scale mission critical infrastructure and application solutions on Ubuntu and open source from Canonical. While not actively developing products, Sustaining Engineering, as part of Support Engineering, solves problems for the customer and for the benefit of the wider Open Source community. As an Engineering Manager in the Sustaining Engineering team, your primary responsibility is to the people you support: ensuring that they are growing as engineers, making valuable contributions, and generally having a great experience at Canonical. We partner with the world's leading silicon vendors to optimise Ubuntu on their latest platforms. We integrate next-generation features and performance enhancements in Ubuntu while also ensuring a common operating experience for their users.

Engineering Managers should be outstanding developers themselves. They should be completely at home reviewing a patch or a software design spec. You will be expected to drive healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality and performance optimisations as well as lead your team to deliver high-quality design and code.

An Engineering Manager is responsible for line management and career guidance. The ability to develop engineering talent, to represent your team and product from a technical perspective, and to drive collaboration with other teams and customers are all critical to success in this role.

You will have the opportunity to influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.

Location: This is a globally remote role. We have open positions in every time zone.

What your day will look like

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior
  • Oversee commercial engagements and support timely delivery on agreed project milestones
  • Participate as technical lead on complex customer engagements involving complete system architectures
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes
  • Integrate and maintain platform-oriented software stacks
  • Optimize Ubuntu for latest hardware platforms
  • Display technical leadership internally and within our external communities
  • Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation
  • Be an active part of the leadership team, collaborating with other leaders

What we are looking for in you

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python
  • Experience with Linux and operational systems software (e.g. kernel or user space)
  • Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distro packaging
  • Experience leading software engineering teams
  • Professional written and spoken English
  • Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation
  • Thoughtfulness, and self-motivation
  • Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long

Nice-to-have skills

  • Experience working with open source communities and licenses
  • Computer architecture knowledge of x86, ARM, RISC-V or s390x

Job Summary

As a Back-End Developer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the server-side architecture that powers our observability platform. You will work closely with Front-End Developers, UX/UI Designers, and Data/AI teams to build scalable, secure, and high-performance APIs, data pipelines, and real-time processing systems that ingest and process massive amounts of telecom data. Your contributions will ensure our platform delivers reliable and timely insights to both operational and executive users.

Key Responsibilities
  • API & Microservices Development
    • Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices to support data ingestion, processing, and integration with front-end components.
    • Ensure APIs are scalable, secure, and optimized for real-time data processing.
  • Build robust data pipelines to ingest, transform, and store real-time data from telecom operators, network management systems, and OSS.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers to ensure seamless integration with big data and cloud storage solutions.
  • Real-Time Processing & Performance
    • Develop back-end components that handle high-volume, low-latency data streams.
    • Optimize system performance, ensuring high availability and rapid response times for critical observability metrics.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into technical specifications and actionable tasks.
  • Participate in agile development practices including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and code reviews.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade existing systems to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Security & Compliance
    • Implement security best practices to protect sensitive telecom data.
    • Ensure the back-end architecture adheres to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Documentation & Testing

Experience:
  • 3–7+ years of professional experience in back-end development, with a strong portfolio of building scalable, data-intensive applications.
  • Proven experience with designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in server-side programming languages (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java, or similar).
  • Experience with databases (SQL and NoSQL) and data processing frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of real-time data integration techniques, message brokers (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ), and cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
