Full Job Description

• PhD in remote sensing, geospatial technology, Space and physical sciences or closely related field degree

The Remote Sensing and GIS Research Center (RSGISRC) at Sultan Qaboos University supports research activities within the university and acts as a national resource, providing strategic service, research projects, consultancy, and training, and promoting international collaboration in the field. The center provides the needed expertise in earth observation form Space and the development of diverse satellites/Drones image processing and computer vision techniques in remote sensing and GIS for analysis and development. The RSGISRC has a vacancy for a researcher position. This job leads and supports RSGISRC initiatives in developing and applying remote sensing and geospatial analysis with funded research projects that address societal and governmental concerns. It is essential to grasp the techniques of remote sensing and space technology, including active and passive systems, multi-spectral, hyperspectral, microwave (SAR), and infrared sensing (IR), as well as satellite and space research and development programs.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Design and plan remote sensing/Earth Observation projects to address specific research questions and objectives. Identify appropriate sensors, data acquisition methods, and analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity of applying for research grants and funding opportunities by writing proposals and concept notes.
  • Identify, select, and acquire relevant remote sensing data from various sources, including satellite imagery, aerial photography, LiDAR, RADAR, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) platforms and other sensor data.
  • Design and develop advanced models using specialized software and deep/machine learning algorithms to extract, classify, detect, predict, and analyze required information from remote sensing integrated with other geospatial datasets, such as GIS based data.
  • Conduct fieldwork to validate remote sensing data, calibrate sensors, and collect ground truth data for accuracy assessment.
  • Organize and manage large geospatial datasets, ensuring data quality, and establishing data sharing and archiving protocols.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in remote sensing technologies, software tools, and industry trends to incorporate cutting-edge methods into research projects.
  • Prepare scientific papers and reports based on research findings for publication in journals, conferences, and technical reports.
Requirements

PhD in remote sensing, geospatial technology, Space and physical sciences or closely related field degree combined with high level experience in programs or projects that involve extensive remote sensing and/or space technologies and processes.

  • Strong background in remote sensing techniques, such as image processing, data analysis, and algorithm development.
  • Proficiency in remote sensing software packages (e.g., ENVI+IDL, ERDAS, ArcGIS, SANP, Pix4D) and programming languages commonly used in remote sensing (e.g., Python, R) and cloud-based platforms (e.g., Google Earth Engine) for data analysis and algorithm development.
  • Solid understanding of geospatial data analysis, GIS principles, and data integration techniques.
  • Experience in Artificial intelligence tools including deep learning and machine learning applications in the field of Remote sensing.
  • Experience in remote sensing research, including data acquisition as well as handling different types of remote sensing multi/hyperspectral data (optical, thermal, RADAR, LiDAR) and knowledge of various satellite sensors.
  • Excellent analytical skills and diligence for accurate interpretation and validation of remote sensing and earth observation results.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team environment.
  • Ability to manage research projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Willingness to explore innovative ideas and approaches in remote sensing, earth observation and space research fields and apply innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
  • Effective communication skills to present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • An excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • The candidate should be flexible to work in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team environments.
